Since 2018, I’ve been thinking and talking about AI adoption, witnessing its incredible acceleration firsthand. According to the 2024 Work Trend Index by Microsoft and LinkedIn, which surveyed 31,000 people across 31 countries, the use of generative AI at work has nearly doubled in just six months. An impressive 75% of global knowledge workers are now utilizing generative AI.
I created Change JRNI, the podcast to spotlight these transformative moments, offering a space to thrive during transitions—both professionally and personally.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Big tech is betting (the future of) everything on this technology. Microsoft, Meta is working on text to video features, Google – you’re seeing AI generated answers when you do a google search, Apple is making updates to Siri. The tools we’re using are getting smarter and as they do, we’re seeing more value creation at work.
- Large language models are driving innovation. Large language models predict words. They are writing aids, not replacements.
- LLMs are just the foundation of what’s coming next. Andre Karpathy, computer scientist, (former director of artificial intelligence and Autopilot Vision at Tesla, co-founder at OpenAI) did a youtube video of how large language models work. He talks about what are all the AI research labs thinking about and working on next.
- AI will impact every knowledge worker. In the U.S. alone, generative AI could boost productivity by up to $1.6 trillion annually if fully adopted for communication tasks. In 2024, the Marketing AI institute estimates 80% of what knowledge workers do every day will be assisted to some degree in the next 1-2 years.
- Career Implications: What are leading organizations doing? Focusing on education and training; Creating an AI council; Developing responsible AI principles and generative AI policies; Conducting AI impact / exposure assessments; Building an AI roadmap – McKinsey published a book with how-to details on what it takes to build the capabilities to outcompete in the age of digital and AI– creating the transformation roadmap, building a talent bench, adopting a new operating model, producing a distributed technology environment so teams can innovate, embedding data everywhere, and unlocking user adoption and enterprise scaling.
